Like painters in art represent ideas, beliefs and manifest emotions. We colorist use chemical colors to express personality, outline a hair style, define the lines and shapes, decrease or accentuate facial features, contrast skin tones, bring out eye color and accentuate a person's lifestyle. Hair color can change somebody character, mood, confidence and also has recognizable psychological effects. Hair color can communicate shapes by putting side by side colors of different intensity. Hair color has and instant effect on people, it can rejuvenate you, make you look mature, professional, passionate, funny, sassy, shy or extreme. In hair color, creativity is endless.

To master hair color, a colorist has to understand chromatics, the perception of color by the human eye and brain, the hair composition, texture and pigmentation. The reason why we, colorist should understand it is because of the nature of color. After all, color is the reflection of light. As bizarre as it sound, colorists play with light, manipulating the way it reflects. Without light, there would be no color.
Have you hear about not visible color? Many species can see wavelengths that fall outside the "visible spectrum". Bees and many other insects can see light in the ultraviolet, which helps them find nectar in flowers.
Understanding the law of color is also very helpful when creating and recommending color. The law of color states that, out of all the colors in the uni-verse, only three - yellow, red and blue, called pri-mary colors - are pure. That means they cannot be created by mixing together any other colors. Instead, when they are mixed together in varying proportions, these primary colors create all other colors. To organize those colors we use a color wheel. The color wheel it comes very useful when doing color corrections.
Identifying level of color, intensity, existing natural and artificial pigmentation, and skin or eyes tones is a must on a client consultation. Knowing a client’s skin tone is important in hair coloring in order to complement a client's natural coloring and helping the client to pick the perfect hair color.
Remember of the beauty of color, the endless creativity and the delightful possibility of being whoever you want to be… young, mature, professional, passionate, funny, sassy, shy, extreme… the next time you are getting your hair colored.
